Steven Stein-Grainger (Baltus
Van Tassel)
Steven Stein-Grainger made his Broadway debut in Sir Andrew
Lloyd Webber's Tony Award winning production of Sunset Boulevard.
During his run he was proud to play the role of Max von Mayerling in over
one hundred performances, starring opposite Glenn Close, Betty Buckley,
and Elaine Paige. Following his success on Broadway in Sunset, Mr. Stein-Grainger
joined the U.S. National Tour of The Phantom of the Opera directed
by Harold Prince. There, in a role he had played in the Toronto production,
he won acclaim for his portrayal of operatic tenor, Ubaldo Piangi, in
some of the finest theaters all across the country.
His operatic performances have earned him the reputation of being an
"acting singer" in roles running the gamut from the seriously
dramatic to the comic. He has enjoyed critical success in such diverse
roles as Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Goro in Madama Butterfly,
The Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Rinnuccio in Gianni Schicchi,
and Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte combining the theatrical and musical
aspects of performance into an engaging operatic experience.
He also enjoys the increasingly frequent opportunity to conduct master
classes and direct productions for young people as well as teaching voice
privately.
Mr. Stein-Grainger has distinguished himself as a very versatile performer
and concertizing has become a major part of his professional life. Orff's
Carmina Burana, Händel's Messiah, Beethoven's Symphony
Nr. 9, and Rossini's Stabat Mater have become mainstays of
his professional work as well as musicals in concert, combining the classical
and musical theatre repertoires seamlessly. His musical theatre roles
include Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd, Mr. Bumble in Oliver!,
Enoch Snow in Carousel, and Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys &
Dolls, and the Padre in Man Of La Mancha among many, many others.
This summer he was seen as Rudolph in Ogunquit Playhouse's production
of Hello Dolly! starring Sally Struthers and has just recently
finished performing Westport Country Playhouse's musical version of A
Christmas Carol playing Mr. Fezziwig.
